Olivia Rodrigo releases behind-the-scenes footage to refute AI use claims

Singer Olivia Rodrigo has released behind-the-scenes footage to address allegations that her new music video for the “Expectations (Remix)”—a collaboration with Chappell Roan—utilized generative artificial intelligence.

Following the video's release, viewers on social media pointed to visual inconsistencies, specifically regarding the appearance of hands and arms in animated sequences, as evidence of AI involvement. In response, Rodrigo’s official fan page and production team shared documentation of the creative process. The footage demonstrates the use of hand-drawn characters, 2D and 3D animation techniques, and analog methods, such as filming animations on a Windows Vista computer screen to achieve a retro aesthetic.

Designer Jack Harrison, who led the analog processing, helped clarify that the visual style was a deliberate choice. This disclosure aligns with Rodrigo’s previous public stance; in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she stated she does not use AI in her musical creation, noting her only experience with the technology was using ChatGPT to brainstorm song titles, which she described as unsuccessful.
