Olivia Rodrigo's new album explores her first adult relationship
Olivia Rodrigo’s third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, released on 12 June, is centered on her first adult romantic relationship. In a Dazed interview she said, “This album is about my first time being in an adult relationship; it’s me discovering what romantic love looks like in real time.”
The record draws heavily on her two‑year partnership with actor Louis Partridge, which began in 2023 and ended at the close of 2025. Rodrigo described the relationship as “an endless source of inspiration” that held up a mirror to parts of herself she had never seen before.
She also offered advice on break‑ups, noting that “going through a breakup can be a really awesome opportunity to redirect your life in a way that feels more aligned with who you are.” She added that heartbreak feels less severe as she ages, saying, “I think it gets easier… heartbreak will never be as bad as it was when you were 17.”
Rodrigo declined to give direct personal details, explaining that fans will have to read her music for clues, and highlighted a “song for someone who’s going through any stage of a relationship.”
