Olivia Wilde defends theatrical release for ‘The Invite’

At the Locarno Film Festival, director and actress Olivia Wilde discussed the distribution of her new comedy-drama, ‘The Invite’. Wilde revealed that she actively fought to secure a theatrical release for the film, claiming that streaming platforms offer what she described as a ‘bribe’ to filmmakers and investors to bypass cinemas.

Wilde explained that while streaming services may offer more immediate financial gains for investors, she prioritized the shared cinematic experience. She credited her financier, Annapurna, for supporting this decision, and noted that A24 secured the film for a theatrical rollout following a competitive bidding process. Netflix had reportedly offered approximately $20 million to secure the title for streaming, a figure Wilde declined.

The film, which stars Wilde alongside Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton, is a remake of the Spanish film ‘Sentimental’. It explores the complexities of long-term relationships and has received positive reception, including a standing ovation at the Sundance Film Festival. Wilde noted that the film’s audience in the United States has been notably young, specifically those under 35.
