Olivia Wilde's 'The Invite' adapts Spanish film 'Sentimental' for Hollywood

Olivia Wilde’s new comedy‑drama The Invite (also released as La invitación) stars Wilde, Seth Rogen, Edward Norton and Penélope Cruz. The film follows two couples whose night together turns into a series of awkward confessions about marriage, desire and mid‑life crisis.

The movie is a Hollywood remake of the 2020 Spanish film Sentimental, written and directed by Cesc Gay and based on his play Los vecinos de arriba. Sentimental has already been adapted in several countries—including Italy, Switzerland, France and South Korea—making it one of the most versioned recent Spanish titles. A24 acquired US rights after a Sundance screening, gave the film a limited release to qualify for Oscar consideration, and plans a wider U.S. rollout on 10 July 2026.

The original Spanish version earned multiple Goya nominations and a win for Alberto San Juan as supporting actor, underscoring the transnational appeal of the story that now returns to the screen with an English‑language cast and a prominent Spanish actress.
