Olivia Wilde’s comedy‑drama ‘The Invite’ premieres in Los Angeles

Olivia Wilde directed and stars in the new A24 comedy‑drama The Invite, which premiered at the DGA Theatre in Los Angeles on June 24. The film follows married couple Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Wilde) as they invite their noisy upstairs neighbors, Pina (Penélope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton), to a dinner party that quickly unravels. The English‑language remake of the Spanish movie The People Upstairs (also known as Sentimental) was adapted by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack. After a Sundance debut and a bidding war that saw A24 win North‑American rights, the movie opened in limited U.S. theatres on June 26 and will expand nationwide on July 10. Critics have praised the ensemble’s performances and Wilde’s direction, giving the film a 93 % Rotten Tomatoes rating.

The red‑carpet event highlighted Wilde’s cut‑out Saint Laurent gown and Cruz’s ice‑blue Chanel dress. Wilde described acting in the picture as “the greatest experience she’s ever had,” while Rogen said the story reflects “the anxieties of middle‑aged couples.” The film marks Wilde’s third directing effort after Booksmart (2019) and Don’t Worry Darling (2022).
