Olivier Faure rejects Bayrou's broad presidential primary proposal

Olivier Faure, the first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), has rejected a proposal by former Prime Minister François Bayrou to hold a broad primary election for the 2027 presidential race. Bayrou suggested a primary encompassing a wide spectrum, from the Socialists to the Gaullists, to unite those who reject political extremes and prevent a potential second-round runoff between Marine Le Pen and Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

Faure argued that voters are not looking to extend the existing central bloc but are seeking a true alternative, specifically advocating for a social and ecological bloc. Instead, Faure supports an open primary for the left, including the Socialists, Greens, and former members of La France Insoumise who have distanced themselves from Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The Socialist Party members previously opted for a closed primary reserved for party members and affiliated organizations, which is scheduled to take place in October.
