Olivier Giroud signals likely retirement from professional football

French striker Olivier Giroud has indicated that the current 2026/2027 season will most likely be his last in professional football. The 40-year-old, who currently plays for Lille, shared these reflections in an interview with L'Équipe as he approaches his birthday.

Giroud, a 2018 World Cup winner with France, has enjoyed a highly decorated career. His achievements include winning the Champions League with Chelsea, the Serie A title with AC Milan, and multiple domestic trophies in France and England. He retired from international football in 2024 as one of France's all-time leading scorers, with 57 goals in 137 appearances.

Reflecting on his career, Giroud expressed a desire to enjoy every remaining moment on the pitch. He noted that returning to France to play for Lille was one of his best career decisions and stated he feels more relaxed than ever as he nears the end of his playing days.
