Ollie Dempsey denied controversial goal in AFL semi-final
Geelong winger Ollie Dempsey was controversially denied a goal during a semi-final match against Fremantle at Optus Stadium. During a one-on-one contest in the goal square, Dempsey attempted to strike the ball with his boot, resulting in a bicycle kick goal.
Although the goal umpire initially ruled the ball was touched, the AFL Review Centre (ARC) declined to overrule the decision, citing insufficient evidence despite the use of high-frame-rate cameras. The decision drew widespread criticism from commentators and former players, who described the play as an extraordinary piece of skill and questioned how the replay could be deemed inconclusive.
Geelong coach Chris Scott expressed visible disbelief during the review process, though he later attempted to downplay his immediate reaction to the ruling.
