Olmedo López hospitalized in Bogotá following medical emergency

Olmedo López, the former director of Colombia’s National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), was urgently transferred to the Shaio Clinic in northern Bogotá following reports of severe chest pain. While he was being held at the Batallón Caldas military facility, medical staff responded to his distress, prompting a transfer to the specialized center to rule out a cardiac event. As of the latest reports, his condition is stable, though an official diagnosis regarding a potential heart attack has not been confirmed.

López is a key figure in investigations involving the misappropriation of funds and irregularities in contracts for water tanker trucks intended for La Guajira. He previously pleaded guilty to embezzlement and conspiracy to commit a crime after plea agreements were rejected. His legal defense has noted the return of 724 million pesos to the state. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for December 14 by the Fourth Specialized Criminal Court of Bogotá.
