Olodum and Lazzo Matumbi highlight Afro-Brazilian cultural resistance

The musical legacy of the Olodum afro-bloc continues to serve as a powerful tool for social consciousness and anti-racism in Brazil. Released in 1988 on the LP Nuferetite, the song ‘Protesto do Olodum’—composed by Marquinhos Marques and Tatau—addressed critical issues including the drought in the Northeast semi-arid region, institutional violence against peripheral residents, and the resilience of Black youth in Salvador.

In a similar vein of cultural preservation, musician Lazzo Matumbi recently participated in the Encontro de Culturas Tradicionais da Chapada dos Veadeiros. Matumbi emphasized the importance of valuing Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous pillars within the nation, advocating for community strength and the recognition of diverse ethnic histories. He highlighted the significance of ancestrality and collective action in the ongoing struggle for respect and rights.
