Olomouc unveils multi‑billion CZK flood‑protection programme
The Czech city of Olomouc is advancing a series of flood‑defence projects funded by a two‑billion‑koruna grant from the national Environment Programme. After completing the first phase and the central‑area works (stages 2A and 2B), the city has finished stage 4A on its southern edge and is now planning stage 4B, a two‑kilometre‑long barrier for the Nový Svět district that will cost between 300 million and 400 million CZK. Construction is slated to start in 2028 with completion expected by 2030. Mayor Miloslav Tichý and General Director of Morava Floods David Füná highlighted the need for the works, recalling the 1997 flood that inundated a fifth of the city and affected thousands of residents. Minister of the Environment Igor Cervený visited the site, emphasizing the importance of securing state funding for the remaining stages. The city also launched an architectural‑landscape competition for the design of the new barrier and is preparing flood‑defence measures for the Chomoutov district, which suffered severe flooding in 2024.
