Olomouc Zoo Welcomes First White‑Headed Lemur Baby
A white‑headed lemur (Eulemur albifrons) was born at the Olomouc Zoo in the Czech Republic. The newborn is still clinging to its mother and will remain under her care for several weeks before reaching sexual maturity, when it is expected to help bolster breeding programmes at partner zoos.
Zoologist Jitka Vokurková explained that the species is endemic to Madagascar and its wild population has sharply declined over three generations due to deforestation, climate change and hunting for meat. Conservation reserves such as Betampona and the island of Nosy Mangabe have been established to protect the lemurs, which also act as seed dispersers that aid forest regeneration. Zoo spokesperson Iveta Gronská highlighted the animal’s nocturnal habits and the family‑based care typical of lemur colonies.
The birth adds to a colony that has been at the Olomouc Zoo for nearly four decades and may support future international breeding efforts aimed at preserving the endangered species.
