Olot hosts international volcanology course
The second International Volcanology Course, Olot–La Palma, is currently being held in Olot. The program involves 25 students from 11 different countries and is organized through the collaboration of two significant European volcanic regions: the Canary Islands and the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone.
Fifteen international experts are leading theoretical sessions and field trips. The curriculum covers topics including physical volcanology, petrology, volcanic stratigraphy, applied geophysics, volcanic monitoring, risk management, and the study of volcanic eruptions. The course is certified by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior.
Participants are utilizing modern scientific tools, such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and supercomputing, to model volcanic processes. The initiative is supported by several organizations, including CSIC through Geociències Barcelona, Espai Cràter, the Olot Higher Studies Foundation, DinàmiG, the Cabildo Insular de La Palma, and the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park.
