Olst-Wijhe municipality faces projected €1.4 million annual budget deficit

The municipality of Olst-Wijhe in the Netherlands is facing a projected annual budget deficit of approximately €1.4 million starting in 2027. This financial pressure is part of a broader trend affecting various Dutch municipalities due to rising costs and shrinking financial resources.

To maintain financial stability, the municipal executive has proposed several measures to the city council. The administration aims to prioritize essential services, such as maintaining a safe living environment, housing, and social services, while minimizing direct impacts on residents. Potential cost-saving strategies include delaying new plans or expansions, adjusting investment and development budgets, reducing extra programs, improving operational management, and exploring ways to increase revenue.

Finance Alderman Hans Olthof stated that by making conscious choices and continuing to invest, the municipality can keep its foundation in order. The city council is expected to make a decision regarding the 2027 budget this autumn.
