Olsztyn children's hospital introduces advanced laser treatment for kidney stones
The Provincial Specialist Children's Hospital in Olsztyn has introduced a modern method for treating kidney and urinary stones in children using the Dornier Thulio thulium laser. This advancement marks a significant step in minimally invasive pediatric surgery, as Olsztyn becomes only the third center in Poland to offer this high-specialization treatment, joining facilities in Dziekanów Leśny and Zielona Góra.
Dr. Bartosz Kotkowicz, a specialist in pediatric urology and surgery, noted that the new technology provides higher efficacy and safety, even in clinically difficult cases. Unlike older laser generations that broke stones into larger fragments requiring manual removal, the thulium laser breaks stones into fine dust. This allows the microscopic remains to be naturally and painlessly flushed out, reducing the risk of irritation to a child's delicate urinary tract and potentially shortening hospital stays.
