Olsztyn court trial seeks life sentence for Christmas Eve murder

The trial regarding the death of 47-year-old Andrzej z Pawlik is nearing its conclusion at the District Court in Olsztyn. The victim died on Christmas Eve 2024 while walking to midnight mass following a family dinner.

The defendant, Gabriel A., who was 18 at the time of the incident and is now 20, faces charges of murder committed with particular cruelty. Prosecutors allege that the defendant and an accomplice were waiting to attack a different target and had attempted to lure someone from their home under the pretext of consuming alcohol. When that plan failed, Andrzej z Pawlik became a victim of a severe beating. His body was later discovered in a retention tank.

During closing arguments, prosecutor Robert Piwnicki requested a sentence of life imprisonment, citing the exceptional cruelty of the act and the symbolic timing of the tragedy. The victim's mother also addressed the court, requesting the same life sentence and expressing the profound emotional toll of the loss.
