Olsztyn hospital reports surge in bilateral cataract surgeries

The Provincial Specialist Hospital in Olsztyn has reported a significant increase in bilateral cataract surgeries performed during a single hospital stay. Since the introduction of National Health Fund (NFZ) reimbursement for this procedure in April 2023, the number of patients undergoing this specific treatment has grown from 30 in the first year to 430 in 2025.

Clinical outcomes for these procedures show improvement in visual acuity, with average Snellen scale scores rising from 0.4 pre-operation to 0.9 post-operation. Additionally, patients have seen an average decrease in intraocular pressure of approximately 2 mmHg. The single-stay approach is noted for facilitating faster recovery and shorter convalescence periods, which is particularly beneficial for elderly patients.
