Olsztyn waste incinerator found in violation of environmental norms

An inspection by the Provincial Inspectorate for Environmental Protection (WIOŚ) in Olsztyn has revealed multiple violations at the local municipal waste incineration plant. The audit, conducted between April and June 2026, examined operations from 2025 and 2026.

Key findings include significant breaches in wastewater management, with industrial sewage discharged into the municipal sewer system exceeding permitted limits by more than eight to nine times. The facility also generated over 300 tons more hazardous waste—specifically dust containing dangerous substances—than its permit allowed.

Regarding air quality, inspectors recorded 25 instances of pollutant emissions exceeding permissible values, including carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrogen chloride. The company responsible, Dobra Energia dla Olsztyna, attributed some of these discrepancies to the facility's first year of operation, noting that while quantity limits were exceeded, qualitative parameters remained within standards. Other issues identified included documentation errors, neglected equipment inspections, and improper management of rainwater and meltwater.
