Olt County approves deviations from legal school class sizes

The Olt County School Inspectorate has approved 17 requests from 16 educational units to operate classes for the 2026–2027 school year with student numbers that deviate from legal limits. Nine requests involve classes with fewer students than the legal minimum, while eight involve classes exceeding the maximum capacity. Notable institutions included in these decisions are the Nicolae Titulescu Theoretical High School in Slatina, which submitted two separate requests.

In a broader national context, Education Minister Mihai Dimian has called for strict limits on primary school class sizes, advocating for a maximum of 24 students to ensure teaching quality. Dimian noted that extensions beyond this number should be strictly exceptional, highlighting instances where classes have reached 30 students, exceeding even the maximum allowed for special circumstances. The Minister suggested that current class merging and expansion decisions are temporary measures driven by national budget deficits and emphasized the need for proper funding to prevent academic quality from being compromised by accounting-based decisions.
