Police departments face leadership disputes and staffing shortages

Law enforcement agencies in different regions are facing leadership and staffing challenges. In Olta, La Rioja, the local police station has been without a formal commissioner for approximately four months. The situation escalated this week when two separate commissioners arrived at the station, both claiming to have orders to assume the position. This has caused confusion among officers and residents. Until the administrative situation is clarified, Sub-commissioner Vanesa Brizuela will continue to lead the station temporarily.

In Colonia, Police Commissioner General Paulo Adán Costa has warned of a structural deficit in personnel. He reported that there is currently only one officer for every 406 inhabitants, a challenge exacerbated by population growth and tourism. Costa noted that the police response remains ‘very reactive’ due to these limitations. The Ministry of the Interior is currently conducting a call for new personnel to fill vacancies, with new officers expected to join next year.
