Olu Jacobs, veteran Nigerian actor and cultural icon, dies

Veteran Nigerian actor Chief Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has passed away. Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, described the death as the end of an extraordinary chapter in Nigerian theatre, television, and film.

Jacobs was recognized as a cultural icon whose career spanned over five decades, bridging the gap between traditional Nigerian theatre and the modern Nollywood industry. His professional journey included work on the British stage and television, demonstrating the global competitiveness of Nigerian artists.

Beyond his acting, Jacobs was noted for his commitment to the creative sector and his work training young performers alongside his wife, Joke Silva. Mohammed highlighted Jacobs' role in using the arts as a tool for cultural diplomacy and national image-building.
