Olusegun Mimiko Calls for Devolution of Power in Nigeria

Former Ondo State governor Olusegun Mimiko urged Nigeria to adopt a biblical “Jethro Principle” as a framework for devolving authority to sub‑national governments. Speaking at the Redeemed Christian Church of God’s 74th Annual Convention, he argued that centralised power fuels inefficiency, corruption, insecurity and poverty, and that delegating power to capable local leaders would improve governance.

Mimiko praised President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing moves to decentralise policing, resource control and decision‑making, but warned that reforms must be matched by capacity, competence and commitment. He called on Christians and people of all faiths to participate actively in politics, framing governance as a sphere of influence for the common good.
