Olwethu Makhanya signs for Rangers on four‑year deal

South African centre‑back Olwethu Makhanya has joined Scottish Premiership club Rangers FC from Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union on a four‑year contract, with an option for a fifth year. The fee was not disclosed by the club, but reports estimate it at around £3 million ($4 million). Makhanya, 22, made 45‑53 appearances for the Union, contributing to 11 clean sheets and helping the team win the Supporters' Shield. He was selected for South Africa’s 2026 World Cup squad but did not feature in the tournament.

Rangers manager Derek McInnes said the defender “has all the attributes to make a real impact here while continuing to develop his game,” praising his physical strength, confidence and experience across different football environments. Makhanya will wear the number 24 shirt at Ibrox and becomes the eighth summer signing for the club as it prepares for the new season and a Europa League qualifying tie.

The transfer is part of a broader squad overhaul aimed at challenging rivals such as Celtic, with Rangers also bringing in several other players ahead of the upcoming Scottish Premiership campaign.
