Olwethu Makhanya's rising value sparks Rangers transfer interest

Rangers defender Olwethu Makhanya has emerged as a standout performer following his move from Philadelphia Union to Ibrox for approximately £3 million in July. The 22-year-old centre-back has quickly become a vital component of Derek McInnes’ side, contributing to a six-game winning streak and delivering strong performances in Old Firm matches against Celtic.

Makhanya’s rapid development has seen his market value rise significantly. According to the CIES Football Observatory, his estimated value has reached £12.3 million, placing him ninth among Scottish Premiership players. Due to this surge in form, reports suggest that major European clubs may make serious approaches in the January transfer window. While Rangers reportedly wish to retain the player for at least a full campaign, the club may consider exceptional offers.

On the international stage, Makhanya recently played a full 90 minutes for South Africa in a 2-1 victory over Guinea. His performance was marked by high statistical efficiency, including a 95 per cent pass accuracy and 100 per cent success in both tackles and aerial duels won.
