Olympia archaeological site to undergo new restoration phase
The Greek Ministry of Culture has announced a new phase of restoration projects at the archaeological site of Olympia, scheduled to begin on September 25, 2026. The program focuses on three primary areas: the Villa of Nero, the Gymnasium, and the treasuries located on Kronios Hill.
At the Villa of Nero, work will include the partial restoration of masonry and vaults, the repair of openings, and the repositioning of fallen architectural elements to improve structural stability. A key component involves uncovering the existing mosaic floor and securing it with a new protective roof. To facilitate tourism, a new visitor path will be designed to allow access without placing additional stress on the original mosaics and floors.
Additionally, the project includes a third phase for the excavation and enhancement of the Gymnasium, as well as the protection and restoration of the retaining wall at the treasuries on Kronios Hill. These efforts follow previous restoration work completed in April 2026 at the workshop of Phidias and various ancient baths.
