Olympic canoeist David Hearn faces legal scrutiny over Reflecting Pool allegations
Three-time Olympic canoeist David Hearn is at the center of a legal controversy involving the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The Trump administration has accused Hearn of intentional vandalism regarding the landmark, a charge that could carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
The allegations stem from an incident in the summer of 1977, when an 18-year-old Hearn and several friends paddled a canoe through the pool as a send-off before traveling to Austria for the Canoe Slalom World Championship. While the stunt was not viewed as a major issue at the time, it has become a focal point in current political and legal disputes.
The Reflecting Pool is currently closed to the public following what federal prosecutors described as a ‘botched’ $14 million renovation project. While Donald Trump has characterized Hearn as a vandal attempting to destroy a beautification project, critics argue that Hearn is being used as a scapegoat. A federal judge recently dismissed the case brought against him with prejudice.
