Nagoya 2026 Asian Games conclude amid logistical issues and Indian success

The 2026 Nagoya Asian Games concluded with a mix of athletic achievement and significant logistical controversy. India secured fourth place in the overall standings, earning 22 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze medals. A major highlight was the Indian women’s hockey team winning gold for the first time in 44 years, defeating China 1-0 in the final. Indian boxers also performed strongly, securing six medals, including three golds.

However, the hosting of the games in Nagoya faced heavy criticism. To manage costs, organizers opted not to build an athletes' village, instead using hotels, container housing, and a cruise ship. This led to reports of inadequate accommodation, poor transportation, and logistical errors, such as misplaying national anthems. The use of elderly volunteers for ceremony protocols also drew international attention, highlighting Japan’s labor shortages and aging population. Despite the operational challenges, the event served as a critical benchmark for athletes preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
