Mike Burton, three-time Olympic swimming champion, dies at 79

Three-time Olympic swimming champion Mike Burton has died at the age of 79 following a battle with Alzheimer’s and dementia. His death was announced by his son, Eric Burton.

Burton was a prominent figure in distance swimming, becoming the first American to win gold medals in the 1,500-meter freestyle at consecutive Olympic Games. He secured two gold medals at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in the 400-meter and 1,500-meter freestyle events, and successfully defended his 1,500-meter title at the 1972 Munich Olympics with a world-record time.

His athletic career was shaped by a childhood accident at age 12, when he was struck by a truck while riding a bicycle, forcing him to transition from contact sports to swimming. Beyond his Olympic success, Burton was a member of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and coached swimming for 35 years.
