Olympique de Marseille loans Hamed Traoré to Genoa with €8 million buy option

Olympique de Marseille has completed a loan deal for midfielder Hamed Junior Traoré to Italian Serie A side Genoa. The agreement includes an option for Genoa to purchase the 26‑year‑old Ivorian international for more than €8 million after a season-long loan, with a medical scheduled to finalize the move.

The transfer is part of Marseille’s broader strategy to reduce its wage bill, which peaked at €163 million in the 2025‑26 season. The club aims to cut payroll to €94 million for 2026‑27, targeting a reduction of €69 million. Traoré’s salary of roughly €320 000 per month, along with other high‑earners such as former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood (about €450 000 per month), are slated to leave. Greenwood is reportedly close to a move to Turkish club Fenerbahçe.

Marseille originally signed Traoré permanently from Bournemouth for around €7.5 million. By loaning him out with a purchase option above €8 million, the club hopes to generate a modest profit while off‑loading his wages. The deal reflects Marseille’s effort to rebalance its finances and reshape the squad ahead of the new season.
