Olympique de Marseille manager disputes stripping Højbjerg of captaincy
Olympique de Marseille manager Bruno Genesio has publicly expressed disagreement with the club's decision to strip Pierre-Emile Højbjerg of the captaincy. Genesio stated that the move was dictated by the club's management, noting that while he must comply as an employee, he does not personally support the decision.
The tension between the Danish midfielder and the club hierarchy reportedly stems from Højbjerg's recent refusal of a transfer to Newcastle United. The potential deal, valued at approximately €15 million, would have helped Marseille reduce its wage bill. Højbjerg currently earns roughly €6 million gross per year.
During a friendly match against Atlético de Madrid, Timothy Weah wore the captain's armband instead of Højbjerg. Reports indicate that during the 87th minute, when Weah was substituted, Højbjerg also refused to accept the armband from the departing player.
