Olympique de Marseille faces financial austerity and fan protests

Olympique de Marseille is facing a dual crisis of sporting failure and financial instability. Following a 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain, which marked the club's fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions, supporters at the Velodrome expressed intense hostility toward owner Frank McCourt. Fans displayed banners mocking the failed ‘Champions Project’ and questioning if the club is headed for Ligue 2.

Financially, the club is shifting toward a period of austerity. After injecting 120 million euros in the first half of 2026, McCourt reportedly intends to stop covering recurring deficits. This transition may involve a 50% reduction in the wage bill over the next two to three years to meet UEFA and DNCG constraints. To offset losses, management is pursuing new revenue streams, including a potential return to Adidas as an equipment provider and seeking strategic partners or investors from the Gulf region.

Despite the pressure and calls for his departure, McCourt remains the majority shareholder, holding approximately 98.22% of voting rights. While he is reportedly looking for new investors to bolster the project, he has not indicated an intention to sell the club.
