Olympique Lyonnais qualifies for Champions League play-offs

Olympique Lyonnais has qualified for the UEFA Champions League play-offs after a 3-0 victory over Sparta Prague in the third qualifying round second leg. After losing the first leg 2-1 in the Czech Republic, Lyon overturned the deficit with goals from Ernest Nuamah, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, and Tyler Morton.

The match was influenced by a red card issued to a Sparta Prague defender in the 34th minute following an incident involving Loïs Openda. The victory, played before a crowd of over 51,000 at Groupama Stadium, secures Lyon a place in the play-off round where they will face Turkish side Fenerbahçe on August 18 and August 26.

Beyond the sporting achievement, the qualification provides significant financial benefits. Under UEFA regulations, reaching the play-off stage guarantees a fixed sum of 4.29 million euros, even in the event of elimination. Success in the subsequent league phase would further increase revenue through participation bonuses and performance-based payouts.
