Malick Fofana joins Sunderland from Lyon in £40m transfer saga

Belgian winger Malick Fofana has completed a transfer from Olympique Lyonnais to Sunderland for a fee reported to be approximately £30 million to £40 million, including bonuses. The move followed a high-profile transfer deadline day saga involving interest from Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

Reports indicate that Fofana had expressed a preference for joining Crystal Palace to reunite with his former Lyon manager, Pierre Sage. However, his agents and family reportedly influenced the final decision, leading to the deal with Sunderland. The transaction is seen as a significant financial boost for Lyon, which has been managing its finances following a failure to qualify for the Champions League.

In addition to Fofana's departure, Lyon has been restructuring its squad, including the transfers of Ainsley Maitland-Niles to Everton and Duje Caleta-Car to Sassuolo. The club is also expected to utilize a joker transfer to bring in Keito Nakamura from Reims.
