Olympique Lyonnais denies Karim Benzema summer transfer

Olympique Lyonnais sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean has clarified that rumors regarding a summer return of Karim Benzema to his former club were largely “fantasy.” While confirming that contact was made with an intermediary during the summer transfer window, Louis-Jean stated that no direct discussions took place with the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner.

Several factors prevented the move from progressing. Tactically, the club was seeking a faster striker profile, leading them to pursue targets such as Loïs Openda. Furthermore, complex contractual obligations presented a significant hurdle; despite being a free agent, Benzema remains tied to the Saudi Arabian Football Federation as an ambassador for the league until 2030, making a transfer to France practically impossible.
