Olympique Lyonnais implements austerity measures to reach financial stability
Olympique Lyonnais (OL) is undergoing a significant economic restructuring aimed at achieving financial stability by 2029. Under the leadership of Michele Kang, the club is implementing strict austerity measures to rebuild its economic model while under the supervision of the DNCG and UEFA.
A primary indicator of this shift is the drastic reduction in the club's wage bill, which has fallen from an estimated 120 million euros at the end of the John Textor era to approximately 55 million euros. This reduction places the club's salary structure among the lower tier of Ligue 1, with wages reportedly lower than those at Rennes or Paris FC.
The austerity extends to operational costs, including reduced travel expenses and the cancellation of traditional staff events. To manage its debt and financial health, the club is focusing on player sales to generate capital. Major players, including Tyler Morton and Moussa Niakhaté, have been identified as potential departures by 2027 to ensure the club continues to generate revenue and avoid future financial instability.
