Olympique Lyonnais signals intent to retain coach Paulo Fonseca
Olympique Lyonnais (OL) sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean has expressed strong support for head coach Paulo Fonseca, indicating a desire to build the club's future around him beyond his current contract, which runs until June 2027.
Despite recent sporting setbacks, including a Champions League playoff elimination, Louis-Jean described a close relationship with Fonseca, stating, “We love each other. We know we want to, Paulo wants to, so we are going to discuss it.” While no formal financial agreement has been reached, the club intends to begin discussions before Christmas.
Louis-Jean also addressed the club's recent transfer activity and economic situation. While OL has met DNCG regulatory requirements, the sporting director admitted that the club did not achieve all its objectives regarding player sales, noting a reluctance to sell players below their market value.
Financially, the club remains under scrutiny following recent economic constraints and the need to balance the budget. However, Louis-Jean noted that the current squad is more complete and possesses greater depth than last season, which is intended to help the team manage the demands of competing in multiple competitions.
