Olympique Lyon loses 2-1 to Sparta Prague in Champions League qualifier

Olympique Lyon were defeated 2‑1 by Sparta Prague in the first leg of the third‑round Champions League qualifying tie played in Prague. The visitors fell behind after an own‑goal by Martin Suchomel just before half‑time. Sparta equalised in the 63rd minute through Matej Ryneš and took the lead two minutes later when John Mercado headed home.

Lyon’s captain Corentin Tolisso missed a late penalty that could have levelled the score. Coach Paulo Fonseca and French media criticised the team’s lack of cohesion, defensive errors and the missed opportunity. The defeat leaves Lyon needing a two‑goal win in the return match at the Groupama Stadium to progress.

UEFA’s prize structure means that advancing past this round would guarantee Lyon a €4.29 million payment, with much larger sums available if the club reaches the group stage.
