Om Birla addresses potential notice to remove CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla stated on Thursday that if the opposition submits a notice to remove Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, action will be taken according to established parliamentary procedures.

Birla explained that the process for removing a CEC is similar to the procedure used for removing a Supreme Court judge. He emphasized that in a democracy, every individual has the right to express their views and opinions, but formal action can only be taken once a motion is officially introduced in Parliament.

Under current regulations, a CEC can only be removed on grounds of proved misbehaviour or incapacity. To initiate such a motion in the Lok Sabha, a notice signed by at least 100 members is required, while the Rajya Sabha requires at least 50 signatures. Once a notice is accepted by the Speaker, a three-member committee is typically formed to investigate the allegations and evidence.
