Om Prakash Mathur sworn in as Kerala Governor amid dietary controversy
Om Prakash Mathur has been sworn in as the 29th Governor of Kerala at Lok Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram. The ceremony was administered by Kerala High Court Chief Justice Soumen Sen and attended by Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan and other state officials.
Mathur’s appointment has immediately triggered political tension following reports that he directed the Lok Bhavan kitchen to prepare only vegetarian food. Leaders from the Congress party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) have criticized the move, with AICC General Secretary K. C. Venugopal accusing the Governor of attempting to impose a specific ideological agenda and infringing upon the dietary traditions of the coastal state.
In response to the backlash, officials from Lok Bhavan clarified that Mathur is a strict vegetarian and the directive applies specifically to the kitchen used for his own meals. They stated that the instruction does not extend to the personal food choices of staff members, who remain free to bring food from home or make other arrangements.
