OMA completes first US affordable housing project in San Francisco

OMA, in collaboration with Y. A. Studio, has completed 730 Stanyan, a mixed-use development in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. This project marks OMA’s first 100% affordable housing development in the United States.

The 194,000-square-foot complex provides 160 permanently affordable units designed for low-income families, formerly unhoused individuals, and young adults. Developed by the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) and the Chinatown Community Development Center (CCDC), the building is situated near the entrance to Golden Gate Park.

Architecturally, the design utilizes two four-story volumes along Haight and Waller streets, connected by an eight-story central section. This configuration creates ground-level courtyards for gardens, play areas, and community gatherings. The layout prioritizes family living, with a significant number of units featuring two or three bedrooms and corner extensions to maximize natural light and views of the park. The building is currently fully occupied.
