Oma Nuclear Power Plant undergoes geological inspection amid delays
The Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) is conducting an on-site investigation at the Oma Nuclear Power Plant, which is being constructed by Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (J-Power) in Aomori Prefecture. NRA Commissioner Kohei Yamaoka is leading the inspection to verify geological layers and faults within the site.
The investigation follows a conclusion reached in October 2025 that certain issues had been resolved. The inspection specifically targets concerns regarding clay layers that could be affected by wind and rain, potentially inducing fault movement and causing building instability. J-Power has been performing safety reinforcement work since March to remove unnecessary geological layers near critical facilities.
Separately, J-Power reported to the local town council that the previously anticipated 2030 operational start date for the plant is now ‘extremely difficult’ to achieve, indicating further delays in the project's timeline.
