Omagh Bombing Inquiry hears evidence on key individuals

The Omagh Bombing Inquiry, chaired by Lord Turnbull, has heard evidence regarding more than 20 ‘key individuals’ allegedly involved in the 1998 car bombing in County Tyrone. The attack, carried out by the Real IRA, killed 29 people and remains the deadliest single atrocity of the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

During proceedings in Belfast, lead counsel Paul Greaney described dissident republican Colm Murphy as sitting ‘like a spider at the centre of the web’ of the planning network. The inquiry is currently examining the period before and after the explosion to determine how the attack was executed and who was responsible. It is also investigating whether UK authorities could have prevented the incident.

Evidence presented included analysis of factual material, diagrams of key individuals, and witness statements. The inquiry follows a 2009 ruling in which a judge found four men—Michael McKevitt, Liam Campbell, Colm Murphy, and Seamus Daly—liable for the bombing.
