Omaha police to stop using shock gloves in Nebraska schools

Omaha police have agreed to stop carrying electric shock gloves, known as Generated Low Output Voltage Emitters (G.L.O.V.E.s), in Nebraska’s largest public school district. The decision follows a request from Omaha Superintendent Matthew Ray, affecting most middle and high schools in the district.

The move comes after reports revealed plans by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to equip officers with the devices, which have also been utilized in some jails. While Omaha police complied with the request, the Bellevue police department—which patrols two Omaha schools—and the Bellevue school district stated they will continue to carry the gloves.

Other large metro area school districts, including Millard, Elkhorn, and Westside, have not yet taken action regarding the use of the devices by the school resource officers assigned to their buildings.
