Omaha Steaks overhauls business amid rising beef prices

Omaha Steaks is implementing a major business overhaul to combat record-high beef prices and shifting consumer habits. CEO Nate Rempe announced a plan to reduce the company’s listed offerings by 75%, focusing on a streamlined selection of US-grown meats. Additionally, the company intends to double its retail footprint over the next two years to compete more directly with grocery stores.

The restructuring comes as American cattle herds reach their lowest levels in 75 years, contributing to a 27% increase in beef prices according to July Consumer Price Index data. While the US government has allowed 300,000 metric tons of foreign beef to enter the country duty-free to mitigate costs, Rempe characterized the move as a “talking point” rather than a meaningful solution. He suggested that ranchers require more incentives to invest in increasing herd sizes following years of drought and rising feed costs.
