Oman oil spill from sanctioned tanker covers 390 square kilometres
An oil slick covering approximately 390 square kilometres has been identified off the coast of Oman, near the Hallaniyat Islands. The spill originated from the Caroline Bezengi, a tanker that sustained damage following an apparent onboard blast. The vessel, which is under sanctions from the European Union and the United Kingdom for transporting Russian crude oil, first reported difficulties on June 8 near the Yemeni port of Mukalla.
Oman's Environment Authority reported that the contamination is moving northeast toward the mainland, reaching within seven kilometres of the shore. Total contamination along the movement path has reached approximately 449 kilometres. Current simulations suggest the slick could advance an additional 121 kilometres within the next 48 hours, depending on weather and sea conditions.
Omani authorities are coordinating efforts to secure the vessel and safely evacuate the remaining oil cargo. While the ship has run aground on rocks near the islands, specialized teams are monitoring the situation via satellite imagery and field surveys to mitigate ecological damage to the region's marine life.
