Oman expands hydrogen energy role through international network

Oman is expanding its involvement in the global hydrogen sector through strategic international cooperation and research into sustainable mobility. The Ministry of Energy and Minerals has joined an international hydrogen network to enhance cooperation in hydrogen technologies, supporting deployment across transportation, industry, power generation, and energy storage.

This initiative aligns with Oman Vision 2040, aiming for economic diversification through innovation and sustainability. Membership in the network is expected to help the country develop regulatory frameworks, technical standards, and green hydrogen value chains while connecting local projects to global markets.

Complementary research into Muscat’s road network indicates that hydrogen adoption could significantly impact emissions. Simulations suggest that a 60% penetration rate of green hydrogen could reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 95%. However, the studies also note that the required number of refueling stations increases exponentially alongside vehicle penetration levels.
