Oman warns of legal action for insulting foreign nations on social media
Oman's Public Prosecution has issued a warning to social media users regarding the potential for legal consequences when posting or sharing content that insults foreign countries, their leaders, national symbols, or citizens. The advisory urges the public to exercise restraint to avoid undermining the Sultanate's diplomatic relations.
Legal experts note that under Oman’s cybercrime legislation, criminal liability is not limited to the original creator of unlawful content. Individuals who repost, distribute, or encourage the circulation of offensive material, misleading information, or content deemed harmful to foreign relations may face imprisonment and fines. These regulations apply to all users, including influencers, activists, and ordinary citizens.
