Omar Abdullah criticizes delay in restoring Jammu and Kashmir statehood

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed deep frustration over the central government's delay in restoring statehood to the region. In an interview with The Wire, Abdullah stated that the lack of a defined timeline has caused public disappointment and has severely eroded his own political capital.

Abdullah criticized the central government's approach, comparing the undefined process of restoring statehood to a marathon where the finish line is constantly shifted. He also addressed arguments that statehood restoration is contingent upon the total eradication of terrorism. Abdullah rejected this logic, noting that his elected government currently possesses no control over the security apparatus in the Union territory.

He argued that tying statehood to anti-terror outcomes effectively transfers decision-making power from New Delhi to Islamabad. Furthermore, Abdullah described the current administrative framework of a Union territory with an Assembly as an "abomination," citing administrative paralysis within the region.
