Omar Abdullah seeks biomass solutions to decarbonize Jammu and Kashmir

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for the development of locally suited and economically viable biomass solutions to reduce Jammu and Kashmir’s dependence on fossil fuels and decarbonize its economy.

Speaking at the 41st National Convention of Chemical Engineers and a national seminar in Srinagar, Abdullah noted that while the region possesses abundant biomass from agriculture, horticulture, forests, and municipal waste, it lacks sustainable models to convert this waste into energy. He emphasized that for these solutions to be successful, they must be economically competitive with existing sources like solar and hydropower.

The event was organized by the Chemical Engineering Division Board of the Institution of Engineers (India) in association with NIT Srinagar. Abdullah highlighted the urgency of transitioning away from carbon-based fuels to improve energy security and mitigate environmental consequences.
