US Ambassador Sergio Gor visits Jammu and Kashmir, signals travel advisory review

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor conducted his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir, meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. During the visit, Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important part of India” and an “incredibly beautiful place.” He noted that the United States would consider reviewing its current travel advisory for the region, citing improved security measures taken by both the central government in New Delhi and the local administration.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the meeting as cordial but emphasized that regional issues are domestic matters that must be resolved by the Indian central government rather than Washington. He stated he would discuss the regional situation but would not lodge complaints or seek external solutions from the US envoy.

The Ambassador’s comments regarding the status of the territory drew a strong diplomatic response from Pakistan. The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the US Chargé d’Affaires in Islamabad to lodge a formal demarche, rejecting the characterization of Jammu and Kashmir as part of India and asserting that it remains an internationally recognized disputed territory.
